Why Specialist Cover Matters

When people think about health insurance, they often focus on surgery and hospital treatment. However, one of the most important stages in healthcare is obtaining an accurate diagnosis.

In New Zealand, patients are typically referred by a GP to a specialist when further investigation is required. Depending on the condition, this may involve MRI scans, PET/CT scans, colonoscopies, cardiac assessments, women's health investigations and other diagnostic procedures.

While these services are available through the public healthcare system, waiting times can vary. Some individuals choose private healthcare options to gain access to consultations and testing sooner.

AIA Specialist and Testing Support (STS) is designed to provide cover for specialist consultations and diagnostic tests. Key features include:

  • Up to NZ$10,000 per year for specialist consultations

  • Up to NZ$100,000 per year for diagnostic tests and procedures

  • Health screening allowance

  • Eligible infertility diagnosis and obstetric care support

  • Choice of a NZ$0 or NZ$250 excess option

From a healthcare planning perspective, early diagnosis can be critical. The sooner a condition is identified, the sooner appropriate treatment options can be considered.

When reviewing health insurance options, it may be worthwhile to consider not only hospital and surgical benefits but also access to specialist consultations and diagnostic testing.
